Artist's Comments

This is a friend of mine, who dances professionally with the name "Sumaya" (meaning something along the lines of "one who always smiles"). Taken at a November 04 hafla (dance party).

Live-action photos and a dark restaurant make it hard to get decent photos. Of the many I took of her, this one is best.

She is a sweet girl, she really is. And she's working her tail off to try and turn the Chicago dance scene into a real community.

Thanks for your comment!

Thanks! I have a heck of a time getting shots of my friends when they're dancing, especially in restaurants. So much gets in the way, and darn it! they won't hold still!

Do you dance, too?

I do not-not belly. I love to go out to clubs and just shag out. I've taken a couple of belly classes, and I was so amazed at the amount of work and movement that goes into what just looks like hip shaking. I have a deep admiration for bellydancers. My friend showed me a video of a dancer I think is from Egypt, and how she could shimmy and dance so fast on stiletto heels even! I like to rollerdisco.
PS I'm happy to have found a deviantartist who is female and my age as well! Hello! I was beginning to think there was only teenagers and older men on here..
