Artist's Comments

Not quite jewelry, not quite textiles...

American Tribal Style (ATS) belly dance makes use of these things called falls. They're hair extentions/additions, and often made of yarn in addition to false hair pieces. Sometimes they're only yarn, and that's what I've made. They are composed of several kinds of yarn (7, in fact) affixed to a barrette, with a silk flower and a strand of beads attached. They are not quite a yard long.

These were my first attempt. I added a bit more yarn later, and have another pair (pink/purple) that are longer.

Thanks!

Hoo, boy, you would ask about the yarn...

1. Lion Brand Chenille Thick & Quick
2. Lion Brand Homespun
3. Yarn Bee Whirligig
4. Moda Dea Vixen
5. Moda Dea Wild
6. Yarn Bee Highland Thistle
7. Jo-Ann Thick N Thin

oops! :O_o:
8. Moda Dea Eden
9. Moda Dea Tutu

OK, so there's actually 9, not 7... I had to dig thru my stash to find the same yarns in diff colors, since the sleevey-things from the reds are gone.

The thicker yarns are the first layer, with the finer/lighter yarns over them. The barrette was wrapped tightly with yarn, and a "backstitch" run down the middle to give the bottom layer something to fix to w/o sliding around on the barrette. (Make sense?)

These look great, and i bet their really light.

I'ma ask another construction question:
What kind of fixture are you using? A clip? A tie?
